Inclusive Access
What is Inclusive
Access?
Inclusive Access programs were created
to combat the increasing cost of course materials, and to improve
student engagement and outcomes.
Inclusive Access is a course materials
delivery model. Digital course
materials are available via the campus LMS (Canvas) on the first day of class.
No purchases are required as the cost of Inclusive Access course
materials are automatically charged to students’ university accounts as a fee.
The savings can be significant as the goal of Inclusive Access course materials models is to provide the least expensive option for students to obtain required course materials. Publishers provide significant discounts for participating in inclusive access programs and students are able to take advantage of the savings.
How are Inclusive Access courses and
materials identified?
Both federal and state laws mandate
that institutions are extremely transparent with Inclusive Access programs.
Transparency includes policy and procedural information.
Notes are included on the UMHB Inclusive Access courses in our online
store at https://store.umhb.edu.
These notes identify the course as Inclusive Access, and specific course
materials information is provided as well as the fee for the cost of the
materials.
Introductory emails are generated to
students who are enrolled in UMHB Inclusive Access courses.
Students also receive instructional emails providing details for
accessing their course materials.
What Type of
Course Materials are included in the UMHB Inclusive Access program?
This depends on your courses and the
course materials that your instructors choose.
Required course materials may be digital books and/or courseware, printed
books, or a combination of both digital and print.
How do students
pay for Inclusive Access?
A list of the UMHB Inclusive Access
courses and fees are provided to the UMHB Bursar’s Office.
Fees are added to students’ university accounts prior to the start of
classes. No purchases are necessary
for Inclusive Access course materials.
What are the
benefits of the UMHB Inclusive Access program for students?
The program offers substantial savings
for course materials. Access to all
required course materials is available on the first day of class.
The process to access materials is easy and instructions are provided.
Digital course materials offer many features, including highlighting,
flash cards, etc. The stress of
finding and purchasing correct course materials for courses is eliminated.
What are the
benefits of the UMHB Inclusive Access program for faculty?
Instructors have academic freedom and
choose their content. Instructors
specify that their courses and required materials be part of the UMHB Campus
Store Inclusive Access program.
Faculty are assured that students have the correct materials and can begin
instruction on the first day of class. Professors
can expect students can come to class prepared and ready to begin homework
assignments. Access to the Inclusive
Access course materials is through the campus LMS (Canvas).
Is Participation
in the UMHB Inclusive Access programs mandatory?
Federal and state laws also mandate
that students have an opt-out option should they choose not to participate in
Inclusive Access programs. In an
effort to maintain transparency, students are provided information about the
opt-out process, specific instructions, and deadlines.
UMHB students enrolled in Inclusive Access courses also receive email
reminders as Inclusive Access opt-out deadlines approach.
How are fees
refunded to students who choose to opt-out of Inclusive Access courses?
Following the opt-out deadlines, a list
of students who choose to opt-out is provided to the UMHB Bursar’s Office.
Fees are refunded to students’ university accounts in a timely manner.
Are course
materials for Inclusive Access courses available in another format in the UMHB
Campus Store?
In most cases, print and digital course
materials are not available in the campus store for required Inclusive Access
course materials. Students who
choose to opt-out of Inclusive Access materials assume responsibility for
procuring required course materials in a timely manner.
Is it possible to
opt-in again if the opt-out processes for Inclusive Access materials are already
completed?
Students wanting to opt-in to Inclusive
Access course materials after opting-out need to make requests in a timely
manner by contacting the UMHB Campus Store of the intent to opt-in to Inclusive
Access course materials. If opt-out
refund fees have been applied, the fee for the course materials will be applied
again to students’ university accounts once the opt-in process is complete.
